Know your rights

What an agency may charge you

This is the part job seekers are most often misled about, so we state it plainly.

  • There is a legal cap. Under the Employment Agencies Act, an agency may charge a job seeker no more than one month of salary for each year of the employment contract, up to a maximum of two months' salary.
  • You must get a receipt. Any fee collected has to be documented. If someone asks for cash with no receipt, that is a warning sign.
  • Ask before you pay. A licensed agency will tell you the fee, the job, the employer and the salary before you commit to anything.
  • Check the licence. You can verify any Singapore employment agency through MOM. Do it — for us as well as for anyone else.
